Visited for the free puppy consultation with the plan to register our new puppy with Medivet Wokingham. At the time he was 8weeks and 5 days old. Unfortunately, our puppies first vaccine was a different brand to what Medivet used (absolutely not a problem with this). However, we were pressurised into a new first vaccine there and then on the spot without time to think or discuss - again this isnt actually my issue.
The vet carried out the assessment on August 15th, only 10 days after he'd been seen by the breeders vet (who I have since spoken to) where I was told he was very healthy. He's running about fine and even can climb both staircases in our 3 story house at 9 weeks old. He jumps around without pain and has never showed signs of issues. The vet assessed him and all seemed fine before asking 'do you have insurance?' The second we said yes, he was suggesting getting a healthy puppy back in ASAP (REALLY PRESSURED INTO BOOKING THERE AND THEN) for sedation and x-rays on his hips. He was telling us how there was laxity in his hips and it was very critical we act immediately (a classic pressure sales technique) to help prevent a lifetime of problems. He also used the emotive pressure, particularly directed at my partner (how would we feel if we missed this and it lead to worse things) etc, coupled with the classic, 'the x-ray may find nothing but at least you'll have piece of mind'. FYI this piece of mind was quoted at £630+ as a minimum.
We didnt book it and asked for a second, third, fourth opinion + extensive research. Cocker spaniels are not known for hip displacia, certainly not compared to other larger breeds anyway. Also, the other vets all confirmed there was no signs of hip issues so are confused as to what he was looking to find. The vet in question will get out of this by saying he's a specialist so found signs no one else would see.
He wasnt caring for the puppy and had zero empathy or friendliness. Be careful if you're taking a puppy there.
The only positive is that everyone at the front desk and on calls have been pleasant to deal with and have showed some of those traits the vet in question is severely lacking.
